Proton Therapy - Coming Soon to NJ/NY Area
Princeton Radiation Oncology has teamed up with ProCure and CentraState Healthcare System to open the first proton therapy center in New Jersey and the metro-New York area. The center will be located in Somerset, New Jersey, about a half-hour's drive from midtown Manhattan. ProCure a leader in the development of world-class proton therapy centers and CentraState Healthcare System is a non-profit community health organization serving the state of New Jersey.
Currently available at only a handful of centers in the United States, proton therapy is an alternative to X-ray radiation for treating cancer. The therapy spares healthy tissue and results in far fewer short- and long-term side effects.
A ground breaking ceremony for the center took place in April of 2010. Construction began immediately. Most recently, in March of 2011, a 220-ton cyclotron, the core of what will soon be New Jersey’s most advanced radiation treatment center, was delivered to the construction site. We are on the fast track to opening the center, ahead of schedule, to begin treating patients with cancer in early 2012.
