SpaceOAR Hydrogel at Princeton Radiation Oncology offers new protection for prostate cancer patients.

Prostate cancer treatment involves delivering a dose of radiation to the prostate that will destroy the tumor cells—without adversely affecting you. At Princeton Radiation Oncology in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, we use a new technique to reduce radiation exposure to the rectum, which is next to the prostate, in order to decrease side effects that could affect your quality of life.

Newly FDA-approved SpaceOAR Hydrogel is a semi-solid, natural substance that our radiation oncologists use to decrease toxicity to the nearby rectum from radiation beams targeting the prostate. We inject the absorbable gel between the prostate and the rectum, which pushes the rectum out of the way during treatment. As a result, there is much less radiation inadvertently delivered to the rectum. This is no small thing. It can significantly improve your daily quality of life. In particular, bowel function is much less likely to be affected by scar tissue or ulceration.

Princeton Radiation Oncology is the first in New Jersey to offer SpaceOAR Hydrogel.

SpaceOAR Hydrogel provides a protective barrier between the prostate and the rectum to keep radiation away from sensitive rectal tissue and protect it from damage.

The benefits of SpaceOAR Hydrogel’s protection Include:

  • Enhanced precision and safety
  • Decreased radiation dose to healthy issue
  • Decreased side effects and complications
